What is a domain name?
A domain name is an way to remember the name of a website address for example www.portmacquariewebdesigns.com.au. All webservers and computers have a unique number (i.e. 146.139.133.24) which acts much the same way as a telephone number. As it's easier to remember names than it is numbers, a system was devised to attach a domain name to each individual web address.
What is a domain extension?
A domain extension is the combination of letters that follow the "dot" in a domain name, such as ".com". Dot com is the most sought after and common domain extension.
Generally Australian businesses are advised to get a "com.au" as they are considered to be more trustworthy because owners of ".com.au" websites are required by law to be registered and have an ABN. They also need to registered for a minimum of 2 years. Currently ".com.au" domains are just $40- for 2 years.
Sometimes it is not always possible to get a ".com" or ".com.au" there are a range of other options now available. For example we recently had a client called Seascape Apartments and as it turns out there were already many businesses already trading in that name all over the world. Most of the preferred domain names were all registered but we found and registered one of the new ".co" domains www.seascapeapartments.co for them.
There is no limit on the number of names you can own, in fact many businesses and organisations own quite a number of domain names and they have them all pointing to their main website.
How important is having a good domain name?
Some people find what they're looking for on the internet by typing particular keywords into Google or similar search engine. Others actually type in a web address into the address bar of their browser in the hope that a website may exist that belongs to a domain name. For example, someone may type in www.discosongs.com.au looking for an Australian site that specialises in 70's music.
